Is your wildflower a weed?

Summer is here and we are reaping the benefits of spring moisture: beautiful wildflowers are bursting into bloom all over Spring Creek. It is wonderful to let nature fill our yards and open spaces with her handiwork. The plants spread easily and are hardy. But wait are those flowers or weeds? For that matter if they are weeds are they noxious weeds?

You may think that if a plant is blooming and pretty it must be a wildflower. Unfortunately that is not always the case. Noxious weeds often fool us into complacency by that very characteristic. We invite you to test your knowledge by taking our Wildflower vs. Noxious Weed quiz found on the link to the left. You might be surprised. (To allow the quiz to work properly you must allow JavaScript to run.)

If you find that your pretty plant is actually an invasive weed learn how to control it. For assistance contact us. We can connect you with an expert, loan equipment and/or provide herbicide for your use. Thanks to donations and grant monies our help is always free of charge.

Spring Creek Region CWMA “Neighbors helping neighbors in the battle against noxious weeds” can be reached via email springcreekweeds@yahoo.com or PO Box 8021, Spring Creek, NV 89815 or telephone Jill Wilkinson 753-8295.

So which is which in the picture above?  The plant on the left is Arrowleaf Balsam Root, a native wildflower.  The airy yellow plant to the right is the noxious weed Dyers Woad.  Click here to learn how to control Dyers Woad.
