Who/What is the Spring Creek Region Cooperative Weed Management Area?

Don't miss this:  our help is free of charge!  Tax deductible donations are appreciated.

HISTORY

In June 2000 a small group of concerned property owners in Spring Creek, NV met with weed specialists to learn about the impact of noxious weeds and to decide if there was enough interest to form a group to fight these invaders.  Goals were identified and work began.  The Spring Creek Volunteer Weed Group eventually adopted the name Spring Creek Weed Action Team or SWAT.  In February 2003 SWAT became the driving force behind the formation of the Spring Creek Region Cooperative Weed Management Area (SCRCWMA). Membership has remained steady with a core group of individuals developing and implementing plans.  Work parties draw additional people who enjoy hands-on activities.  Click on the following link to learn who is serving on the current board of directors, review minutes of past meetings, or read our bylaws:  More information about Spring Creek Region CWMA.

MISSION

The Spring Creek Region Cooperative Weed Management Area located in Elko County Nevada, is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3), non-partisan, citizen based group committed to noxious weed education and control. We work with home owners, ranchers, subdivisions, churches, shopping centers and industrial areas. Additionally we cooperate in weed control efforts on lands administered by Elko County School District, Southfork State Recreation Area, South Fork (Te-Moak) Indian Reservation, NDOT, BLM, and USFS.  SCRCWMA encompasses 109,000 acres of private and public lands, and serves a population of 15,500.  Click on the map for larger image.

PUBLIC AWARENESS

Members of SCRCWMA give presentations about noxious weeds and conduct weed identification tours. We assist property owners in identification and control methods specific to their needs. SCRCWMA volunteers contribute articles to local papers and organize information booths. SCRCWMA helped to fund "Fighting Invasive Weeds -- A Northeastern Nevada Landowners Guide to Healthy Landscapes"This downloadable 2.25 MB .pdf file is published by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. Members have attended pesticide application training, GPS training and weed management seminars.

IDENTIFICATION & MAPPING

Volunteers survey public use areas, right of ways, and private property for noxious weed infestations, using both GPS units and traditional methods. Known locations of noxious weeds are transferred to a database and mapped. Information is shared with the Nevada Weed Action Committee mapping effort.

CONTROL & ERADICATION

SCRCWMA encourages land use activities that do not contribute to the spread of noxious weeds. Volunteers in neighborhoods throughout the region organize weed pulls. Herbicide is applied to targeted weed infestations; including both private and public lands, state and county road right of ways. SCRCWMA members reseed disturbed land with desirable vegetation and monitor its progress. Controlled burning is used to remove dead vegetation, which increases the ability to treat plants during early growth stages. Individual property owners are assisted with equipment, herbicide and seed as requested at no charge.

FUNDING

SCRCWMA is funded through private donations of cash, supplies, equipment and annual grants.  Both the USFS and BLM have loaned equipment and donated seed. Sierra Pacific Utility Company and Frontier Communications have designated donations of seed and/or funds.  We have held two garage sales.
